But they were so perfect together...

Was anyone else a little bit shocked when Antonia Kidman split this week with hubby Angus Hawley? She seemed to have the whole thing sewn up – great marriage, beautiful children and a rocking career. Then, suddenly, her hubby is in treatment for depression and they’re separating. Just like that – the whole thing collapsed like a house of cards. I’ll be sending Antonia a martini and the Reality Chick hotline number toot sweet, but it also brings me to the topic for today’s blog – surprise splits.
There’s been a heap of them over the years in celebrityville – Brad n’ Jen (they seemed so perfect together), Nick and Jessica (he wrote love songs about her for goodness sakes... LOVE SONGS), Katie Holmes and Chris Klein (aww, they were so ALL AMERICAN) Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid (seemed so solid until she fell for our Russ); Kate Hudson and her rocker hubby Chris (mis-matched, but cute all the same); Reese and Ryan (although hello, the signs were there, if we're honest). And the list goes on.
My question is – do you ever really know what’s going on behind the scenes for any couple? No matter how perfect it may seem from the outside – it can be a real mess on the home front. The opposite can also be true. A messy/bickering couple who wear their problems on their sleeves, can actually be really sweet and relatively harmonious behind closed doors. I guess the take-home lesson here kids, is you shouldn’t assume your friends have cookie cutter relationships just because they’re ticking the husband, kids, house boxes. We should also try to listen out for small signs that all is not well in perfectionland for our happily paired-off friends and family. They might be subtly trying to tell us something is wrong. I know that I was dropping hints right, left and centre before my last big break-up and I dearly wished that someone had thrown me a life-buoy and a bottle of vodka months before I actually made the break.
This week’s pop quiz: Have you ever been in a surprise break-up? Or seen a relationship unravel in front of your very eyes? Or if you just fancy sharing your favourite celeb split from the past year.... hop to it.

I always feel ripped off when another celeb marriage bites the dust. In fact I'm ashamed to admit I felt actually DEPRESSED when Brad and Jen finally called it quits. How dare they - they were FREAKING PERFECT!!!
This could be my problem, or rather, a problem fed by the cult of celebrity - an unmistakable feeling that I actually know these people and should grieve for the break-up pain they're in. Sick, when you think about it. Kinda like everyone bawling their eyes out for days over Princess Di's untimely demise. But again I'm dribbling and off-topic which is so NOT like me at all. :-)

ummm, RC, have you stopped to think that maybe antonia tortured angus to the point that he needed to COMMIT HIMSELF TO A MENTAL HOSPITAL then her super-rich family rallied around and basically cut him a deal so she could swan off into the sunset looking like the poor thwarted wife?
I mean, it's possible. I'm not fooled. I'm suspicious of anyone who does that much yoga.

Depressed?! You're a classic Polly...but yeah, I know what you mean - if two gorgeous, rich celebs can't keep it together, what hope do the rest of us have?

Anon, you might be right about that poor Angus character. Couldn't have been easy to have had both Tom Cruise and Keith Urban as brothers-in-law. Enough to send anyone to the loonybin!

I wouldn't mind Keithy-baby as a brother-in-law. Maybe Nic and Ant are involved in a seedy threesome thing and that's why Ant is over happy families? Ant has been busy teaching Nic all her yoga tricks and soon they're going to unleash themselves on Keith... ohhh yuck. Sometimes i even gross myself out.

i was quite gutted when nick and jess called it quits. even though she pissed me off thru newlyweds, th eway she pretended she could never read his cards and he'd spent ages writing her a poem etc...

Kate, I watched Newlyweds too, but I always thought Jess treated Nick like crap. He was a total sweetheart and she walked all over him in her cowboy boots and hotpants. Still, it was kinda sad when they split. I thought they'd be TF (together forever)

Oh my goodness Anon - that's just plain wrong!

I think our fixation with the perfect marriage thing can be quite damaging actually. (Sorry to come over all serious). There's no such thing (apart from mine, obv) but people have such unrealistic expectations. One of my favourite celeb marriages (although they are not married) is Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis. They are so cute/hot.
